This collection contains immigration records of "Home Children" - young migrants sent from the United Kingdom to Canada between the years 1869 and 1932 as part of various child migration schemes. Records typically include the child’s name, date of birth, date and port of departure, date and port of arrival, destination in Canada, and occasionally additional notes on the child’s background or placement. Sourced from Library and Archives Canada, this collection is subject to LAC’s Terms and Conditions. Between 1869 and 1932, over 100,000 children were sent from Britain to Canada through various philanthropic and government-supported programs aimed at alleviating child poverty and populating rural Canadian areas. These children, commonly known as “Home Children,” were often orphans or came from impoverished families and were placed in institutional homes before being selected for emigration. Upon arrival in Canada, many of these children were placed with Canadian families, often as domestic servants or farm laborers. While some found stable and caring homes, others faced harsh working conditions and social stigma. Despite the challenges, many Home Children went on to lead productive lives, and their descendants now form a significant part of Canada's population. This collection provides valuable insights into this important chapter in Canadian immigration history. It includes records from various immigration agencies and government departments that oversaw the migration and settlement of these children.

Thomas John Barnardo

Thomas John Barnardo was an Irish philanthropist and founder and director of homes for poor and deprived children. From the foundation of the homes in 1867 to Barnardo's death, nearly 60,000 children had been taken in, most being trained and placed out in life. At his death, his charity cared for over 8,500 children in 96 homes.
