Notes on "Uncle Abbie" Womack

Back in 1978 I sat down with my grandmother Mamie Eaves Paulson and great-aunt Bertie Eaves Dean to ask questions on their family history. In talking about their mother, Alice Penola Womack Eaves, they mentioned she was raised by her Uncle "Abbie" and Aunt Lucy. Later on when I researched the family, I found that Uncle "Abbie" was Abraham (or Abram) B. Womack, son of David Womack II and Sarah Ann Norris.

Uncle Abbie had served in the Civil War. At some point he was wounded and his wife Lucy brought him home. He would not eat beef because he had seen soldiers kill cows and horses bogged down in the mud to eat.

Uncle Abbie and Aunt Lucy also raised several other children that weren't their own, they had a reputation for being kind-hearted. One night, they heard the dogs barking and sent a boy out to see who was outside. Some people handed him a basket and said it was a gift for "Miss Lucy" and walked off. Jane Margaret Newman - Still A Mystery

After almost 30 years of researching our family history, I still know almost nothing about my great, great-grandmother Jane Margaret Newman. We have the tin type picture that Stephen Willie Eaves carried in his wallet until it was bent and cracked. Her face is still very visible, it seems like she wants to smile, but back then you didn't smile for the camera. I see a lot of resembalance between her and her granddaughter Bertie Eaves Dean.

The little information I have about her comes from Bertie Eaves Dean and Mamie Eaves Paulson. They knew her name, but were not sure if it was spelled Newman or Numan. Since their father Stephen Willie died in December 1913 when they were very small, they did not hear any stories from him. What they remembered was passed on by their mother Alice Penola Womack Eaves and their dad's half-brothers and sisters who they grew up knowing.

I have never found a marriage record for Isaac S. Eaves and Jane Mar...

Della Fae Ewing, 65 Died Monday, April 13,2009 in an ABilene Hospital .Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. today, Wednesday April 15,2--009, in Lemons Gap Cemetery, with Reverend Mark Moore officiating, directed by Fry-Bartlett Funeral home in Tuscola.
Della was born March 18, `944 in Jacksboro to Joseph Edward and Dora Odella Massengale Johnson. She married Carrol Ewing June 27, 1962 in Odessa, Texas. The couple moved to Lawn from Abilene in 1981. She was co-owner of "The Outfitters" at Lawn and was a Baptist.
Preceding her in death were her parents, a sister Verla May Young, and one daughter Rhonda Jean Finlay.
Survivors include her husband Carrol Ewing of Lawn; one son, Brian King and wife Tammie of Lawn; four grandchildren, Ryan McCoy Finlay,Kole King and wife Christi, Kara King and Kali King; three sisters-in-law, Fern Baird,Helen Hackney,and Shirley Roberson; several other relatives and many friends.

This is the research notes I put into MyFamily.com in 2000, now 9 years old - it can probably be updated a little

In an effort to put all my research material into a chronological order, I am going to start putting in what I have and edit as I add new material. I will include resources and names of persons who contributed the material. This will be a "work in progress” until all the information I have has been entered in. You may want to check this area each time you come on the site to check for any new entries or corrections that have been made.

From "Early Families of the N.C. Counties of Rockingham and Stokes with Revolutionary War Service":

Joseph Darnall - born 1750 N.C., died after 13 March 1834 Stokes Co., N.C., married 1783 Surry Co., N.C. to Winifred Perry, born 1761. Children:

Information Extracted from the letters of Louis Daniel:

Louis Daniel believed that the Joseph Daniel in Desoto Co., MS is the patriarch of the Daniel clan. He said that Joseph came from Rockingham County, N.C., but we don't know what year. (Could Joseph be the Josiah Daniel on the 1845 State Census for MS in Pontotoc Co.?)

He believed there were five Daniel brothers originally, two were older than Enoch, John and Alexander, and that two had remained in Mississippi besides Enoch (Alexander and who else?) He thought that one of Enoch's brothers was named John and that he had gone to Texas and raised 8 sons. He said that John had married a Tallent.

Note: I think the John who married a Tallent is Alexander's son John Edwin "Jesse" Daniel who married Lou Ella Tallent. He had probably heard about John from his father.

Louis also believed that Enoch had some half-brothers who came from Tennessee to Mississippi; He said they were a mean bunch, especially Coot Daniel whose father was Jack Daniel. (Sandy Daniel has notes on a Jack Daniel from Tennessee with a son named Coot.) Louis said his father told him about these people.

He had heard that Coot Daniel was a mean old man (who said he was an alcoholic - Effie?) and that he was the father of James Mayfield Daniel. There was also another brother named Quay. Louis said part of these people went back up to Tennessee and may belong to the Jack Daniel group there.

Chester Daniel from Arizona said that his grandpa is on video tape talking about Enoch's 1/2 brothers (he said cousins of Tom & Ben - Enoch's children) were in Arkansas. Tom, Ben and these boys got into a fight over gambling. The story went that they used to go across the river and gamble, and on one of these trips, Enoch's son Ben got his belly split open with a knife. (He lived, but was never the same.) One of the cousins killed one of the guys responsible. The sheriff's posse came after the two boys (the cousins) and the boys had barricaded themselves behind some rocks. They killed all the deputies (they thought). One deputy played dead and he later told people that the one boy got up and crowed like a rooster. The boys got in a boat and took off down the Tennessee River. It's these two that are supposed to have become the kinfolk of the Jack Daniel distillery company.

Louis said his grandpa - William Albert Daniel, told him that Enoch Daniel came from North Carolina with three brothers and half brothers. Also that Imogene had repeated the story that Effie Daniel Gamble told - that Alexander and Enoch Daniel married sisters, and that the family had Indian blood from the Bass family. That is the family legend passed on for years.

Also, he said that his Dad told him that Dave and Zade Daniel came to see his father, William Albert Daniel in Oklahoma. They said they were working for the secret service.

Letter from Charles Lafayette Daniel to Louis Daniel, dated 13 June 1990:

I am a grandson and descendent of Lemuel Russell Daniel, born 1843, probably in Floyd County, Georgia: died 1925 at Mineral Wells, Texas. I am attempting to trace his family history and identify other family relationships prior to leaving Georgia for Texas after the Civil War. He and three brothers came to Palo Pinto County, Texas probably in 1873-4.

From the 1850 census records of Floyd County and the 1860 census of Chattooga County, both located in the northwest corner of Georgia and created out of the Indian Cherokee Nation in the early 1830's. I have located the James H. Daniel family, Jane C. wife, Sons: John H., Lemuel R., Daughters: Margaret, Francis A. and Virginia C.

Four of the boys came to Palo Pinto County, Texas. Lemuel settled in Mineral Wells, Wiley in Santo, Taylor in Stephenville and what happened to William B. is unknown although there is some evidence he may have settled in the Abilene, Texas area. I am trying to put as many of the descendants of these people into a family history as information affords and likewise to gather earlier history on this family.

Should you have any information concerning such, I would be most appreciative to receive and will provide you with a report on the status of this research, if desired.

Excerpts from letter from Sandy Daniel dated 29 January, 1995:

I got the book Chet and Loretta Daniel had printed.

It seems they know Enoch was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. They have your Daniel line (Alexander) in the Appendix but they have Susan Bass as Bates and only Martha Jane listed.

They do have the story of the FIVE BROTHERS!!

"In 1987, Alex Daniel, grandson (or great grandson) of Lemuel Russell Daniel told of 5 brothers who settled in various areas of the country after the Civil War.

1. Lemuel Russell Daniel born in Georgia, lived in Mineral Wells, Tx.

2. (James) Taylor Daniel lived in Enid, Oklahoma

3. Wally Daniel (Wiley Echols Daniel) lived in Santo, TX

4. Enoch Daniel lived in Mississippi

5. Unknown brother, whereabouts unknown.

Book is based on two lines they refer to as the Georgia Daniel line and the Mississippi Daniel line. The Georgia Daniel line includes the first 3 brothers and the Mississippi line refers to Enoch's ancestors.

May 20, 1821 - Zadock Bass married Jane Russell in Jasper County, Georgia. Zadock was born about 1798 in Nash County, North Carolina, the son of Jethro Bass. Jane was born about 1801 in Georgia to David Russell and Susan Saxon, both of South Carolina.

This letter was among a bundle of letters lent to me by Alma Sledge back in 1993. She had saved many letters that had been sent to her and her husband and her father and mother-in-law by Sledge, Tallent, Tutor and Inmon family members. I was given permission to copy and use the letters in any way to help in family research. I have tried to type the letter exactly as it appears, only correcting spelling and punctuation to make it easier to understand:

Sorry you have been ill. We have not had flu but have had slight colds. Mrs. Milie fell 5th day of March and hurt her (artheritis crippled) hip but did not break any bones but was bed fast for 3 or four weeks I guess but is where she can use her walker again and that is lots of help. James & me are doing fairly well.

As I have stated, Uncle Earnest Tallant died July 9, 1961 but Aunt Ada (Johnston) Tallant his wife still lives at the same home which is at Lambert, Mississippi.

Finally I will try to get this mailed. We went to visit Uncle B.O. & them few weeks back and showed them your letter. Clarentine (Inmon) Bland (Aunt Jettie Inmon's daughter) was visiting Idell (Tallant) Bland, so I told her also you were wanting information, so she may send you some & Idell was interested & said they would try to gather some information and so did Aunt Ila Tallant, so they may have already written you. I was waiting to get Quay's wife & children's age & so on, so I'd have more of a report. So I have just been too busy with the gardening & so on to take time to finish the report. Hope the rest will send the information.

We are all doing fairly well. Jane and her family who live in California won't get to come this summer, I don't guess. Lud & Nola Bevill's son (who is Mr. Perry Sledge's grandson) is leaving by plane for Los Angeles, California (close to where our daughter Jane lives), he got her address & phone no. so she will be seeing him soon. He will go to college there for about 2 months or at least it will have to do with his college work some way. Then he will return home.

Well I must close & gather some greens. We have had lots of rain for the past weeks, wish it would quit now & let us work the gardens out. Ha. Hope you can read this as I am in such a rush.

Memories of Grandpa

I loved the note that my cousin Pamela Daniel Neves sent with a picture of our grandpa Elzie and some of the family members - it let me see him through someone else's eyes, yet agreed so much with my memories of him. I believe grandpa was truly one of a kind, he was so full of fun and yet had all the courtesy of a southern gentleman. He would not wear his hat in the house, nor would he sit in the house to drink a beer, he took it outside.

He could write in a manner that it could only be read by holding it up to a mirror, and he could do adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing in his head. I have a wooden puzzle he gave my mother on a visit when I was around 2 or 3. It was carved from a single piece of wood, but it is like a cage with wooden balls inside. I have heard that there is a store in Henryetta, Oklahoma (when he lived the end of his life) that has a display of wooden animals that he had carved. I hope I can find this one day and photograph them.

He certainly loved all his family, from the first time I met him at age 18 I felt like he had been a part of my life always. He loved to tease, but it was never in a mean way. He made you feel that you were were sharing the joke, not being made fun of. I wish I could have spent more time with him, there were so many questions I wish I could go back and ask him.

I am copying Pam's note word for word, only correcting a few typing errors, so that the feelings she has for him come through. Thank you Pam for sharing this with me, and everyone.

It is late but I thought I would send you another picture and let you know some of the things I remember about grandpa Elzie aka (grandpa Chicken Bird). This picture was taken about 20 years ago, grandpa was married to Rosie Harvey then from Laton, California. In the picture is Rachel and Chet and their kids along with my dad's 2nd wife looking out the window. Her name was Julie Rodriquez...couldn't stand her. My dad took the picture.

Grandpa got the name "Chicken Bird" by us for ringing all those chickens' necks. He used to love to show us how and then pluck them to be cooked. Grandpa had the best gardens in this world and they never had any weeds in them at all.

Before grandpa married Rosie and was living in Corcoran, I can remember him being married to my grandma Sally...she died when I was 16. It was a sad time for me, she was so sick with cancer. I remember her climbing out of her bed in the hospital to get in her rocking chair. I'm very lucky to remember all that I do.

Anyway in this picture it shows grandpa's cane he made, he always said I could have one when he died, but who knows where anything ever went. He was always in overalls. After grandma died he was in his little house in Corcoran and was gonna take a bath and told me that if he didn't call in 30 minutes he couldn't get out of the bath tub and I would have to go over and help him out. I told him no way, he would have to just shrivel up.

He always teased us, one of his better things to do was to pinch our jeans and say how thick is that material - quite a a very loving grandpa! He had a lump in his breast and they cut off his nipple and all us grandchildren always wanted to see it.

I have a lot of their pictures and I'll start sending as I go. What really amazes me is that he out lived my mom and my dad, he was one of the best and I really am glad that I got to spend so much time with him. I have a picture of Warren - Larry's son and grandpa together somewhere when he was real small, and they looked alike then too.

Anyway, anything you would like to use that I write you can edit it, because I can be pretty sloppy..talk to you later.

A Short Story on Grandpa & Grandma Daniel

I was re-reading my cousin Jessie's recollections on our grandparents, Elzie and Sally Jackson Daniel and a story that my mom told me about them came to mind.

When I was growing up, I stuck close to my mom (Bonita Daniel Paulson) and was lucky enough to hear stories about her family. I would try to picture them in my mind since I had only met one of her sisters (Vitha) and then on one brief visit.

Grandma came for two visits, first in 1961 then a longer visit the next year to help my mom the last few months of her pregnancy with my brother Micheal. Grandpa didn't come to visit until 1968, after Grandma had died and he was thinking of getting married again.

Mom would tell me what her parents were like when she was growing up, many things impressed me. Grandma never learned to read or write, but she was an inventive cook. She made jelly from green grapes that was so pretty and clear that you could read through the jar.

On Sundays Grandpa liked to take Grandma, my mom, Aunt Vi and Aunt Rachel for drives. They would stop somewhere along the way and he would buy each of them a pint of ice cream.

Being a kid, the thing that I always wanted to hear was the "skeleton in the closet" type of stories. The closest any of them came was about what happened one Saturday when they had gone to town. Back then I guess everyone went to town on Saturdays to shop, get a haircut, go to the movies and etc.

Grandpa was always a flirt, I know he was when I knew him. Seems that a lady who worked at the store was a flirt herself and she and Grandpa were having a little bit more of a good time than Grandma thought was appropriate.

After Grandpa left and went on other errands. Grandma had a little talk with the store clerk about flirting with other women's husbands. Sounds like one of those Loretta Lynn songs "Honey, You Ain't Woman Enough To Take My Man"!!!

Mom said she never saw her parents exchange cross words. That's not to say that she didn't know when they were mad at each other, but they didn't argue in front of the kids. They would go off away from the house and air out their differences. Grandpa was in for a good dressing down after the incident in town.

I was always impressed by the idea that my grandparents didn't argue in front on their children, they were always a united front. I told my husband about it, he said his parents were the same way. I decided that was how I wanted my kids to see us one day. So thank you Grandma and Grandpa for giving me something to look up to and pass on to my own children.

My Memories of Grandpa Elzie Daniel - by Jessie Van Arsdale

Jessie gave me permission to share her memories of our Grandpa Elzie Daniel that she wrote in one of her e-mail messages. I hope she will share more, I will add them to these:

I think I'll share a few of my memories of our Grandpa Elzie Daniel today. He is such a big picture to me that I almost don't know where to start.

Grandpa always teased me about being born eleven days before my parents' nine month anniversary, boy did that bug me. Later when I learned about the weeks it took to cook a baby I realized I was a legitimate honeymoon baby, of course by that time I was old enough to get the hang of Grandpa's teasing - it didn't matter anymore. Teasing is the operative word.

I always used to stick my tongue out at Grandpa; if he could get close enough he'd grab my tongue & would not let go. It seemed like it would take forever to get loose. He must have been trying to teach me a lesson but it didn't work. At age 52 the tongue still gets stuck out!!!

I always had fun with Grandpa, he gave me a rabbit when I was about 7. I loved that rabbit, until one Sunday while I was at church it got loose & my Dad tried to stop it by laying a long pipe down on it. Well the pipe was too heavy -- that Sunday we had the best chicken dinner until I found out it was bunny. (That is an awful story)

We would visit Grandpa and Granny in Northern California. It was fun picking cherries for Granny's pie and green beans fresh out of Grandpa's garden, but the most fun was when Grandpa would give us kids long sticks. We'd go out to the chicken pen & close our eyes while Grandpa wrung the chicken's neck. Then we would poke the dead chicken & watch the head & body fly off in different directions. I can't believe I remember that!

Grandpa got the tag "Grandpa Chicken Bird" when Pam had Brian & six days later I gave birth to Michael. If we said we were going to Grandpa's, the boys would want to know which one. So to avoid confusion J.B. was Grandpa and Elzie became Grandpa Chicken Bird.

Grandpa was a tramp artist; he could pick up a scrap piece of wood or grape vine & like magic it became a toy or game or a beautiful walking stick. I remember one year he made whirley gigs for each of his children's families: ours was an airplane. It flew for years on a tall pole marking the corner of our front yard in Corcoran, California. I would sit & listen to Grandpa tell stories (he was a wonderful story teller) & watch him whittle a stick into an animal. He was magic.

Grandpa's gardens were a thing to behold, he grew everything & loved to walk you through the rows of vegetables pointing out all the marvelous greens & things. I would sample as I walked along with him. As a child all through the years to adulthood I remember taking home bags of Grandpa's garden goodies.

I remember in Grandpa's later years he was a snappy dresser. When Grandpa went to town he wore his good cowboy hat, polyester walking suit & always carried his hand-carved grapevine walking stick. He cut a fine figure with his silver hair. The ladies at the bank always had time to talk to Grandpa. As a matter of fact, I remember he was quite a social man.
