My great-great-great-great grandpa was John Sherard Coleman, married 1818 at St. Margarets, Leicester to Henrietta Charlotte L. Mangeon. He died in 1828, and his son, John Sherard, my great-great-great grandpa, was born in 1828 in Bitteswell, Leicester. I also know that John Sherard the first (so to speak) had another son, Edmund Thomas Coleman b. 1824, who was part of the first party of white men to climb Mt. Baker, Washington, USA.
Now, I have a bit more information, that John Sherard I's father was Henry Coleman (1739-1794) and his mother was Hester. Henry Coleman's father was Henry Coleman (1705-1779) and his mother was Anne Freeman (1703-1761).
Does anyone else have any information about these Colemans? I would be very interested. My great-great grandpa was Charles Edmond S. Coleman (1858-1952). He was born in London and immigrated to Canada in 1914.
Since posting I have come across some more information, from other people and research
John Sherard Coleman was born 1793 in Independent Market Harborough, Leicester, and his wife Henrietta Charlotte Lucy Mangeon was born in 1798. Her grandpa, Pierre Mangeon, was born in France and left during the Revolution, marrying a lady who was born in Germany, Catharine Rumble.
John S. and Henrietta Coleman's children were:
Henry Sherard (1819), Frederick William Sherard (~1821), Fanny Sophia (1822), Edmund Thomas (1824), Henrietta Elizabeth (1825, married Samuel Clarke), Julia Sherard (1827, married Henrich Franz Schaffer), and John Sherard (1828)
John Sherard Coleman married Clara Wood in 1856. Their children: Charles Edmond Sherard (1858), Clara Julia Sherard (~1858), Ellen N (~1859), Mary B (1860), Alice (~1862), Florence (~1865), John Sherard (~1870), Alfred Lincoln (~1874), and Harold B (~1879). Their children were all born in the county of Middlesex/London.
Charles E.S. Coleman married Mary Ridley Stennett in 1892 and they had four children: Herbert Stennett (1894), Ellen Clara (1896), Alice Caroline (1898), and Frederick Warner (1900). Their son Bert immigrated to Canada in 1911, and the rest of the family followed in 1913. Bert later served in the army and returned to England. He married Alice Morgan.
If any of the people mentioned here sound like your ancestors, I would love to hear from you.
I am a bit uncertain about the earlier generations. Other people I've talked to have an extra generation between the two Henry Colemans: a Thomas Coleman and Phoebe Brathwaite.
